China and Its New 5-Year Plan to Save Environment and Fight Climate Change

The experts in China have stated that the country has recently issued its new five-year plan for tackling climate change. According to this plan, China is setting up its goal to appear as a global leader by following low carbon technology for a carbon-constrained world. Previously China set its target to increase industries in the country while completely ignoring the negative environmental impacts.

The founder of China Dialogue, Isabel Hilton gave a brief description of the plan on March 1, 2021. She highlighted that China is worldwide known as a major investor in running coal-based power plants and now the country wants to cut off its dependency on coal fires power plants.

Currently, the largest contributor to global greenhouse gases is China. The country alone is emitting 28% of total greenhouse gases on the Earth.

A senior policy advisor for Greenpeace East Asia, Li Shou anticipated that the 2021-2025 year plan comprises economic and social development that will help in reducing the emission of greenhouse gases by shifting the Chinese industry onto renewable energy sources rather than fossil fuels.

Also, he mentioned that before 2060 the largest industries have to prepare plans that will be based on low to zero carbon emissions. The industries will contribute to China’s set target of becoming Carbon neutral.

Dimitri de Boer of the China office told that switching from nonrenewable energy sources- fossil fuels- to green technology is a real challenge in the world. There is an uproar clash between energy agencies and the environment of China about the operational continuity of the recently approved 37 gigawatts coal-fired power plant.

International researchers indicated that the estimated capacity of all coal-fired power plants would be sufficient to power all of Germany. The head of the International Institute for Environment and Development, Andrew Norton gave his review that China had not presented an extensive model to green its foreign finance.

The founding Director of the Hoffmann Centre for Sustainable Resource Economy, Bernice Lee stated that China is facing criticism from all around the world due to its investment in coal-fired power plants. The country is reconsidering its policies in order to reduce its contribution to greenhouse gases.
