2021 Year In Review: Pakistan’s Environmental Achievements

INTRODUCTION:

The Islamic republic of Pakistan enjoys good and important geographical location which extends from 61°E to 77° 45 E longitudes and 4°N to 37°N latitude. Pakistan is divided into five provinces, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Balochistan, Sindh and Gilgit Batistan.

The environmental impacts are different because physiographically it is divided into three regions that is, the northern mountains, the western highlands, and the Indus plains. The northern region is above the sea level and consists of famous peaks, most of them ranging above 4,500 meters. The glaciers in northern areas feed the rivers on which the largest irrigation system is based. Pakistan is basically a warm and dry country having four seasons, cold (December to February), spring (March through May), summer (June through September) and monsoon period (October and November).

Pakistan is an agricultural country and boost up the economy of the country which is directly dependent on the climate and environmental factors for better development.

In year 2021, Pakistan has achieved a lot in the fields of Agriculture, the livestock population, the fish production, the forest covers, and the soil conditions are all improved and developed in the recent years. In environmental sector, Pakistan grew a lot restoring the ecosystem and reducing the environmental issues such as pollution, impacts of climate change, reduction of greenhouse gases and so on.

PAKISTAN’S ENVIRONMENTAL ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2021:

The achievements of Pakistan in 2021 are listed and discussed below:

  1. SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT:

The forests are important component of the ecosystem. The sustainable forest management project was started with the objective to conserve biodiversity, mitigation of climate change and securing forest ecosystem. The project included forests from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sindh. The protection of the forests, restoring and rehabilitation of degraded forests, in order to reduce the impacts of environmental issues and tackle the climate change.

  1. DISASTER RISK REDUCTION PROGRAMME:

The climate change is a global issue responsible for the environmental disasters like flood, storms etc. the disaster risk reduction programme was initiated with the purpose to control the risk of disasters caused by the environmental issues. For awareness, disaster risk reduction were given in different provinces of Pakistan to develop sustainable development goals, and how to mitigate the climate change.

  1. ECOSYSTEM PROTECTION PROGRAM:

Ecosystem protection program was initiated with the purpose to protect the ecosystem and make it favourable place for different species and reduce the risks of extinction and threats to their survival. The snow leopard is one of the unique living organisms found in the northern regions of Pakistan is protected with the help of ecosystem protection program as the favourable condition are provided.

  1. SUSTAINABLE LAND MANAGEMENT PROGRAM:

This program was started to combat desertification in Pakistan by improving the water conservation, on far practices and improving dry land ecosystem. Under this program, the environmental issues like climate change and human activities like deforestation was controlled. This program was completed in March, 2021.

  1. COMPREHENSIVE REDUCTION AND ELIMINATION OF ORGANIC POLLUTANTS:

Pollution is one of the major issues in Pakistan, which have harmful impacts on human health and environment. The pollutants are substances that are responsible for the pollution. Comprehensive reduction and elimination of organic pollutants program was started to eliminate the pollutants and make a proper system for their safe disposal and reduce the exposure to it as they have harmful effects on human health.

  1. BILLION TREE TSUNAMI PROJECT:

The trees are important components in the reduction of environmental issues. It absorbs carbon dioxide which is responsible for greenhouse effect and release oxygen in the atmosphere. The project helped in the restoration of the environment, land, and forests and reduced the impacts of climate change. 10 Billion Tree Tsunami Project was even appreciated by UNEP Executive Director  on an international level.       7. PAKISTAN HOSTED WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2021

Pakistan was officially chosen as the host of the World Environment Day 2021 which was a huge honour and achievement for Pakistan as it helped to bring the world’s attention to Pakistan’s commitment to ecosystem restoration as well as our environmental achievements. CONCLUSION:

In the year 2021, Pakistan achieved a lot in environment sector and controlled much of the environmental issues. These achievements helped in the country progress as they have good impacts on other sectors too such as agriculture.
