Pakistan has more land space and a favorable environment than Spain, the country that is currently recognized as the world’s leader in olives production. Through hard work and strategic implementation, Pakistan could lead to olives cultivation on a bigger level. News has reported that on Monday, 15 March 2020, Prime Minister Imran Khan has launched the olive cultivation campaign. On this occasion, the Prime Minister briefed the importance of olive cultivation in the country.  According to him, large-scale olive production could turn out to be an investment opportunity for the country and would bring increased foreign exchange to the country.

The olive cultivation campaign has been launched in the Nowshera district. He further said one of the biggest challenges Pakistan has been facing right now is food security and olive plantation drive in Pakistan will help in tackling food security issues in the country.

The country has the potential to grow olives on a large-scale due to its topography and climatic zones. Imran Khan said that water scare regions of Baluchistan, Punjab, and Suleiman ranges provide a preferable environment for the cultivation of olives.

Olive plantation drive is one of the projects initiated by PTI’s government in Pakistan. Other initiatives include the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami project, Miyawaki Urban Forest, etc. Pakistan is also aiming to utilize renewable energy sources. All these efforts by the Government of Pakistan indicate that the country is trying hard to deal with climate-induced impacts.

According to them, Pakistan could increase the production of olives by adapting the latest Chinese technology. A report has mentioned that olives from Spain and Italy are imported into China. Pakistan has gained access to the markets in China and the Chinese markets would prove to be the potential source for olive exports.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, about four million olive plants will be grafted for olive cultivation. In Amangarh, Nowshera olive plantation covers approximately 27 hectares of area. In Pakistan, 35,000 hectares of area is under olive plantation. Olive plantation drive will create job opportunities for the people of Pakistan.

Other officials who attended the event include Special Assistant on Climate Change Amin Aslam who recently started off 3 Interlinked Nature Parks in Chakwal, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Shah Farman, Defence Minister Pervez Khattak, Chief Minister Mahmood Khan, etc.
