West Asian Countries Set Four-Year Environment Action Plan

UNEP Western Asia Midterm Strategy 2020-2025

The United Nations Environment Programme is a global platform that raises voices for environment-related issues from all over the world. The UNEP provides environmental guidance and motivates in taking care of the environment. This platform focuses on making people and nations aware of the steps and actions that could help in improving living standards without making any compromise to that of the later generations.

For the subsequent outcome of the new United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) 5th session that will occur on  22nd and 23rd of February 2021, the high-level meeting was held by the Western Asia UNEP Regional office. The pre-meeting included participants from the Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council, League of Arab States, Stakeholders, senior environment executives, spokespersons for UNEP, and some other big groups.

The Regions of West Asia comprises the State of Palestine, the United Arab Emirates, the Sultanate of Oman, the Republic of Yemen, the State of Kuwait, the Syrian Arab Republic, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Republic of Iraq, Kingdom of Bahrain, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The prime concern of the meeting was to discuss possible actions of the United Nations Environment Assembly that could be taken to tackle regional environmental issues by introducing the UNEP Mid-Term Strategy from 2020 to 2025. The follow-up after the meeting will assist UNEP Regional Office in planning work projects towards the betterment of regional countries.

Going into brief summary of the midterm strategy, UNEP Officer and Regional Director of Western Asia, Mr. Dimassi said, it is specifically designed in a current scientific way, which gives more attention to the environmental agenda. It verifies concurrence of environmental challenges such as climate change, nature, and chemical pollution, which create hindrances in efforts of the world’s ability to eradicate poverty while making it difficult to accomplish sustainable environmental goals and the Paris agreement on climate change.

Moreover, according to the news report the meeting was held again and this time the debated topics included most prevailing environmental issues among respective countries. Also, Mr. Dimassi briefed about the success of the first West Asia Environment Ministerial Meeting that occurred the previous year in August. During the first meeting, the consequences of global pandemic covid 19 on the environment were discussed. He seemed hopeful for more successful events in upcoming years.

The Regional UNEP Western Asia once again showed its commitment to serve its countries and announced its dedication to follow the midterm strategy that eventually aims for sustainable goals, a pollution-free environment, a greener planet, and better living standards that don’t bother nature.
